Norman and Susan Westgate with daughters Marsha and Holly started Susie’s BBQ in 1997 at the Nevada State Barbecue Championship in Carson City, NV. , Coming in at 2nd place. Receiving great reviews. Norman and Susan took their barbecue to the public and started catering, fairs, air shows, Farmers markets, and car shows.
In 1999 they joined the Kansas City Barbeque Society (KCBS) and started cooking on the pro circuit against the best cookers in the U.S. That year they competed in 2 state championships (California and Nevada). They placed 5 th place in California and didn’t place in Nevada.
In 2001 Susie’s BBQ competed in 3 state championships. Winning 1st place in the Florida State Championship, 8th in the California competition.
In 2002 Susie’s BBQ did not place in any competitions so they stepped back and took a look at what they were doing right and wrong. In 2003 Susie’s BBQ went to the judging school and became KCBS Certified BBQ Judges #6273-6275. They Judged 2 st ate championships and learned a few things at the same time to improve their own barbecuing.
In 2004 Susie’s BBQ took 4th place in Colorado, 4th in Oregan, 5th place in California against 55 teams, and 1st in Nevada against 59 teams. In 2005 Susie’s BBQ will be back on the road and hope to win more competitions.Through the years Susie’s BBQ has progressed from a small backyard Brinkman cooker to the present an Old Hickory Pitt that can hold 800 lbs of meat in one cooking cycle.
